La Vizcaína was founded in 2011. It is a new project by the Spanish star winemaker Raúl Pérez. In 2012, he was named Winemaker of the Year by the trade magazine "der Feinschmecker".
Raúl Pérez wants to take on a new challenge in this second winery in Bierzo. His goal is to revive the old native grape varieties. La Vizcaína has 4 wines from 2 ha. vineyards in Valtuille de Abajo, a small wine-growing village where Raúl was also born and raised, and where he founded his first winery Bodegas y Viñedos in 2005. The vines grow mostly on clay and loam soils, and the work in the vineyard is generally done as naturally as possible. Raúl uses exclusively native yeast varieties and his wines are not filtered.
